Teaching Practice

I approach teaching with the same passion, enthusiasm, and dedication that I bring to my composition and performance work, because I consider teaching to be an integral part of my overall musical practice.

As a teacher I believe in balancing technical training with an approach which is fun, creative, and which fosters playful experimentation for students to learn, question, and explore the musical and sonic worlds around them. Playing an instrument is not just about learning how to use that instrument but also learning about music-making in general. In this spirit I encourage my students to explore the many available musical roles – and especially to combine learning an instrument with learning how to create and write their own music. I understand music-making as a joyous life activity which is a unique way to engage with the world and which incorporates and deepens the qualities with which we thrive – emotionally, intellectually, and socially. Learning about music is about having fun and about fostering a love for music that we carry with us throughout our entire life.

I am a conservatory-trained composer and performer with degrees from the Bard College Conservatory of Music (B.M. in music composition and B.A. in Ancient Greek) as well as from the California Institute of the Arts (M.F.A. in music composition). I have been teaching music to students of all ages for over a decade in both private and group settings. In addition to my private students, I am on faculty at the Santa Monica Conservatory of Music as well as at various local public schools for their after-school enrichment programs.
